The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
